Symptom

You want to encrypt the connection between your mail software, e.g. Outlook, Livemail, Thunderbird, and the mail server of your domain.

Solution

The Bitpalace mail servers support all popular protocols and encryption technologies so that it is up to you whether your want to use encryption or not. If you want to encrypt the connection, neither use your domain name for the incoming mail server (POP3, IMAP), nor for the outgoing mail server (SMTP), but use the host name instead. On the host there is only one mail server active that serves all customers who share the same host. That mail server can be reached by the host name and has an SSL certificate that matches the host name. This makes an encrypted connection possible. But when you use a domain name instead, the certificate does not match the domain name so that encryption fails.

The host name and settings for your mail software can be found in your server welcome mail that you have received at the beginning of your contract. Use these ports in your mail client for encrypted connections:

Outgoing mail: Port 25 with SMTPS (encrypted, TLS), alternative ports 465, 587

Incoming mail: POP3S (port 995) or IMAPS (port 993)

When you use these ports, the connection will not be encrypted:

Incoming mail: POP3 (port 110), IMAP (port 143)

Most mail clients offer a drop down box from where you can simply select if you wish to apply an encryption or not.
